Dow Jumps 1% as Strong Earnings Lift Value Stocks While the Nasdaq Stalls; Brent Settles at $108.79 After a Five-Month High as TASI Drops 1.7% to Its Lowest Close Since 2021
Takeaway: On Wednesday 21 October 2026 (Asia/Dubai), markets are digesting a rotation day on Wall Street and a sharp sell-off in Riyadh. On Tuesday the Dow jumped 1.02% to 52,495.88 and the S&P 500 added 0.28% to 7,712.57 as strong results from Equifax, Hasbro and 3M lifted most stocks, while the Nasdaq slipped 0.02% to 26,424.82 as AI and big-tech names paused. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to about 5.12% after weak housing data. Brent settled at $108.79 (−0.7%) after touching a five-month high of $111.99, as hopes for US-Iran mediation offset Houthi claims of attacks on Saudi sites. In the Gulf, TASI fell 1.7% to 9,952.06, its lowest close since April 2021, Qatar lost 0.4% to 8,598.42, a fresh six-year low, and Kuwait’s All-Share edged down 0.09% to 8,399.28. This morning Asian tech shares are rebounding, led by Korea, after SpaceX’s strong results, and Brent is back near $110.
What happened
1) US equities: earnings and rotation lift the Dow, tech takes a breather
- Tuesday 20 October 2026 close (Reuters; AP; WSJ): Dow 52,495.88 (+529.85 / +1.02%), S&P 500 7,712.57 (+21.84 / +0.28%), Nasdaq Composite 26,424.82 (−6.07 / −0.02%); the small-cap Russell 2000 rose 1.7% (Reuters).
- Rotation: the S&P 500 value index rose 0.9% while its growth counterpart fell 0.2%. Health care led the 11 sectors and hit a record high, with Eli Lilly the biggest point contributor; financials gained 1%, real estate 1.7% and utilities 1.2%. Technology eased 0.3% and communication services fell 0.9% as Netflix lost 1.7%, Meta 1.6% and Alphabet 1% (Reuters). Advancers beat decliners by about 2 to 1 on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq (Reuters).
- Earnings movers: Equifax rallied 11.3% and Hasbro 11.2% on better-than-expected results, and 3M rose 5.8% after raising its full-year profit forecast and expanding a data-centre partnership with Amazon (AP; Reuters). General Motors sank 6.8% despite beating profit estimates and announcing a buyback of up to $20 billion, as its full-year guidance midpoint fell short (AP; CNBC). GE Aerospace fell almost 4% after free cash flow missed estimates, even though it raised its 2026 guidance (CNBC). Airlines rose as oil eased: American +3.7%, United +2.3%. Braze soared 51.7% on a Salesforce takeover deal (AP).
- After the bell: Netflix fell about 6% in extended trading after forecasting fourth-quarter net income of $2.79 billion and earnings of 67 cents a share, below estimates of $3.07 billion and 73 cents, and cutting its 2026 advertising forecast to about $2.7 billion; third-quarter revenue rose 11.8% to $13.44 billion (Reuters). SpaceX rose about 4% after hours as its first quarterly profit as a listed company beat estimates: AFP reported net profit of $4.4 billion and revenue up 161% to $14.6 billion (Reuters; AFP).
2) Rates, data, the dollar and gold
- The 10-year Treasury yield fell about 2 basis points to roughly 5.12%, after dipping as low as 5.073% during the day, while the 2-year yield rose about 2 basis points to around 4.78% (Reuters; CNBC).
- Housing data were weak: September housing starts fell 5.2% to an annual rate of 1.22 million, below the 1.3 million expected (CNBC), and pending home sales dropped 7.3% in September (National Association of Realtors).
- CME FedWatch puts the chance of a rate hike at next week’s 27–28 October Fed meeting at about 17%, down from 57.6% a month ago (Reuters; CNBC).
- The dollar index fell 0.25% to 101.71 and the euro rose 0.22% to $1.1235 (Reuters). Spot gold eased about 0.4% to around $4,125 an ounce despite lower yields (Reuters; Kitco).
- Europe: French stocks fell 0.38% and the STOXX 600 0.14% as worries about unrest in France lingered; the gap between French and German 10-year yields widened to 152.5 basis points (Reuters). London’s FTSE 100 slipped 0.3% (AP).
3) Oil: a $9 intraday swing in the expiring WTI contract
- Tuesday settlement (Reuters; Dow Jones via MarketWatch; CNBC): Brent $108.79 (−$0.76 / −0.69%) after reaching $111.99, a five-month high. The expiring November WTI contract settled at $101.79 (−$1.87 / −1.8%) after hitting $110.48 earlier in the session, and the December WTI contract, now the front month, settled 0.7% lower at $97.82.
- Prices rose early on reports of attacks on shipping around the Strait of Hormuz (Kpler counts at least 18 vessel attacks in two weeks) and Houthi claims of strikes on an Aramco site in Yanbu, the Shaybah oilfield and the Riyadh and Abha airports, which Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm and Reuters could not verify. They then reversed as Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian met Pakistan’s army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, a key US-Iran mediator, in Tehran (Reuters).
- Wednesday in Asia, oil turned higher again on supply worries: Brent was up 0.8% at $109.64 shortly after the open (Reuters via CNBC) and later about 1.4% higher at around $110.25, with WTI near $99.12 (AFP). Brent has swung between about $97 and $112 this month (AP).
4) Gulf equities: Tuesday 20 October
- TASI 9,952.06 (−171.56 / −1.69%), its lowest close since April 2021, on turnover of about SAR 3.8bn (Argaam; Asharq Al-Awsat; Reuters). Only 24 stocks rose while 257 fell (Argaam). Aramco lost 1.2% to SAR 25.48 and Ma’aden 4.7% (Reuters; Argaam); Al Rajhi Bank slipped to SAR 60.15 and SNB to SAR 36.54, while SABIC Agri-Nutrients and Bank Albilad fell about 3% after their third-quarter results (Argaam). The index is now down about 5.1% this year (Argaam). Saudi Arabia also postponed its flagship investment conference until next year (Reuters).
- Qatar (QE) 8,598.42 (−34.24 / −0.40%), its lowest level in more than six years (QNA; Reuters). Breadth was actually positive, with 28 stocks up and 20 down, but heavyweight Qatar National Bank fell 0.7%; turnover was about QR418.1m (QNA; Reuters).
- Kuwait All-Share 8,399.28 (−7.50 / −0.09%); the Premier Market fell 0.16% to 8,826.34 while the Main Market rose 0.26% to 8,440.82; value traded about KD61.6m (Business 24; Reuters).
- UAE: Dubai’s index eased 0.3% to 5,835, with Dubai Islamic Bank down 0.7%, while Abu Dhabi bucked the trend with a 0.5% gain to 9,829 (Reuters via Business Recorder).
- Elsewhere: Oman −1.1% to 7,552 and Egypt’s blue-chip index +1.9% to 52,089 (Reuters via Business Recorder).
- Gulf markets open later this morning (10:00 KSA / 11:00 UAE), so no Wednesday Gulf prices are included here.
5) Asia and futures: Wednesday morning
- On Tuesday Korea’s Kospi fell 3.7% after AI company Elice dropped 32% on its market debut (AP).
- Wednesday: tech shares rebounded. The Kospi was up between about 3% and 4% by late morning, with SK Hynix and Samsung up at least 7% and Elice hitting its 29.9% daily limit; Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained about 1.2–1.3% to around 64,900 after September exports jumped 16.7% from a year earlier (AP; AFP). Hong Kong and Shanghai were little changed.
- US stock futures pointed higher, led by Nasdaq contracts, after the SpaceX results (Yahoo Finance; Investor’s Business Daily).
Why it matters for Gulf + US-focused Arab traders
- Leadership is shifting, at least for now: Tuesday’s gains came from health care, financials, industrials and small caps while big tech paused. Meta and Tesla tonight will test whether AI spending is turning into profits.
- Oil is trading headlines both ways: the expiring WTI contract swung about $9 in one session. Moves of that size can reverse quickly, so confirmed supply data, such as tonight’s US inventory report, matter more than the first reaction to a headline.
- Saudi weakness is broad: TASI fell to a five-year low with more than ten decliners for every gainer, even as Brent stayed above $100. Regional security risk is weighing more on Gulf equities than high oil prices are helping them.
What’s ahead
- Today (Wednesday): AT&T, Thermo Fisher, Philip Morris, NextEra, Abbott and CME Group report before the US open; Meta, Tesla, IBM, Texas Instruments and Lam Research after the close (eOption; Reuters). US weekly crude inventories (18:30 Asia/Dubai) and a US$13bn 20-year Treasury auction (21:00 Asia/Dubai) (eOption).
- Thursday: US weekly jobless claims (16:30 Asia/Dubai); Procter & Gamble, American Airlines, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Union Pacific and Comcast before the open (eOption).
- Friday: S&P Global flash PMIs for October (17:45 Asia/Dubai) and the final University of Michigan sentiment survey (18:00 Asia/Dubai); American Express and SLB before the open (eOption).
- Next week: The Fed meets on 27–28 October, with the decision on 28 October; the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, PCE, is also due (CNBC).
Short educational angle: growth vs value, and what a rotation day looks like
Index providers split stocks into “growth” and “value” styles. Growth indexes lean toward companies valued on expected future earnings, such as large technology and communication services names. Value indexes lean toward companies priced more on current earnings, assets or dividends, such as banks, health care, industrials and energy. Because growth companies’ profits sit further in the future, their valuations tend to be more sensitive to interest rates and to doubts about long-term payoffs, such as the current debate over AI spending. Tuesday showed how a rotation looks in the data: the S&P 500 value index rose 0.9% while the growth index fell 0.2%, health care hit a record, small caps gained 1.7%, and advancers outnumbered decliners by about 2 to 1, yet the tech-heavy Nasdaq finished flat (Reuters). Comparing style indexes, sector moves and breadth helps show whether money is leaving the market or simply moving within it. One day of rotation does not make a trend; it is worth watching whether it lasts through this week’s big-tech results. This is educational framing only, not a forecast or a recommendation on any trade.
