S&P 500 Closes Above 7,800 for the First Time as Yields Ease From a 2002 High — TASI Rebounds 1%, Qatar Slips Ahead of the Fed Minutes

Takeaway: Into Wednesday 7 October 2026 Asia/Dubai morning, Tuesday was a day of relief in the bond market. The 10-year Treasury yield fell 4 bps to 5.270%, a day after closing at its highest since 2002, and that was enough to lift the S&P 500 0.58% to a record 7,818.93 — its first close above 7,800 and its first record since August. The Nasdaq added 0.45% to another record, the Dow rose 0.49%, but the Russell 2000 fell 0.59%. Leadership came from utilities and power producers, with Constellation Energy up 12.3% on a long-term power deal with Google. Brent settled almost flat at US$100.58, then climbed about 1% in Asian trade this morning. In the Gulf the order flipped from Monday: TASI rebounded 1.05% on broad buying, Qatar slipped 0.28%, and Kuwait rose 0.18%, snapping a five-session losing streak. Tonight’s focus: the Fed’s September minutes at 10 p.m. UAE and a 10-year Treasury auction.

What happened

1) US equities — a record for the S&P 500, led by power and chips

  • Tuesday 6 October 2026 close (Associated Press via WTOP / Reuters via MarketScreener):
  • S&P 500 7,818.93 (+44.98 / +0.58%) — a record close, its first above 7,800 and its 28th record close of the year (WSJ); intraday high 7,844.52
  • Dow 51,521.28 (+253.38 / +0.49%) — still just over 5% below its 5 August record close (Reuters)
  • Nasdaq 27,599.79 (+122.48 / +0.45%) — a second straight record close
  • Russell 2000 2,830.30 (−16.84 / −0.59%)
  • Year to date: S&P 500 +14.2%, Nasdaq +18.7%, Dow +7.2%, Russell 2000 +14.0% (AP).
  • Movers (Reuters): Constellation Energy +12.3% after a long-term power deal with Alphabet’s Google; Marvell Technology +5.8% after raising its 2028 revenue forecast on data-centre demand; AMD +2.8% after CEO Lisa Su said it plans to substantially increase chip supply in 2027; Option Care Health +32.7% after McKesson and Clayton Dubilier & Rice agreed to buy it in a deal worth about US$5.8 billion including debt. Lamb Weston also jumped after its quarterly profit beat forecasts (AP).
  • Under the surface (Reuters): 10 of 11 S&P 500 sectors rose, with utilities leading and healthcare the only decliner; six of the “Magnificent Seven” gained. NYSE advancers beat decliners 1.93-to-1, but on the Nasdaq the split was almost even (2,394 up, 2,378 down), and volume was 16.50 billion shares versus a 20-session average of 17.51 billion.

2) Bonds, data and the Fed — a pause in the selloff, with tests ahead

  • The 10-year yield fell 4.0 bps to 5.270% and the 2-year fell 4.2 bps to 4.789% (Tradeweb 3 p.m. close via Dow Jones), snapping a two-day rise. The 10-year is still up 1.118 percentage points this year. The 30-year ended near 5.64% (US Treasury daily par yield curve).
  • Auction: the Treasury sold US$58 billion of 3-year notes at 4.932%, the highest yield for that maturity since May 2006 (WSJ). The result came in fractionally below the 4.934% pre-auction market level, with a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.62 versus a six-auction average of 2.65 (Newsquawk). A 10-year auction is due Wednesday and a 30-year on Thursday (Reuters).
  • Data: the US trade deficit widened 13.7% to US$105.6 billion in August as imports hit a record US$420.8 billion (+4.3%), while exports rose 1.4% to US$315.2 billion (BEA). Reuters noted capital goods imports rose 4.4%, reflecting AI-related investment.
  • Fed: after September’s hike to 3.75%–4.00%, traders price about a 19% chance of another hike at the 27–28 October meeting, down from about 51% a week earlier (CME FedWatch via Reuters). The minutes of the 15–16 September meeting are due today, Wednesday 7 October, at 2 p.m. ET (10 p.m. UAE). They predate the weak September jobs report, so markets will read them mainly for how many officials saw further hikes as likely.
  • Earnings: third-quarter reporting starts next week with large financial firms; analysts expect S&P 500 earnings growth of 30.6% year on year, led by energy (+114.7%) and technology (+66.5%) (LSEG via Reuters).

3) Oil — flat settlement, firmer this morning

  • Tuesday settlement: Brent (December) US$100.58 (+US$0.26 / +0.3%); WTI (November) US$89.44 (+US$0.01), after both recovered from earlier losses (Reuters / WSJ).
  • Supply side: Vitol CEO Russell Hardy said about 12 million bpd of crude and 2 million bpd of products have left the Middle East on tankers in the last seven to 10 days. Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said flows through the East-West pipeline to Yanbu had reached 5.8 million barrels (Reuters).
  • Risk side: Saudi airports in Jazan and Najran were targeted in two attacks on Monday evening, injuring three people and causing limited damage, according to the Saudi aviation authority (Reuters).
  • This morning: in Asian trade Brent rose 1.06% to US$101.65 and WTI 1.05% to US$90.38, as a storm heads toward the US Gulf of Mexico and Saudi–Houthi tensions persist (Reuters).

4) Gulf equities — Tuesday 6 October 2026

  • TASI 10,589.95 (+110.17 / +1.05%) (Arab News), recovering all of Monday’s loss. Value rose to about SR4.15 billion (from SR3.61 billion on Monday) on 189.1 million shares, with 189 companies advancing against 71 decliners. The index traded between 10,504.18 and 10,594.85 and is up 0.95% this year (Argaam). Banks rose 1.25%: Al Rajhi +1.03% to SR63.75 and SNB +1.09% to SR39.02; Aramco +0.94% to SR25.80; Almarai +3.47% to SR45.28 after its board approved a 2026–2031 strategy. Nomu +1.55% to 21,736.43; MSCI Tadawul 30 +1.05% to 1,424.55. Reuters also cited Riyadh’s statement that Saudi-backed Yemeni forces recaptured coastline along the Bab el-Mandeb up to Mocha.
  • QE Index (Qatar) 9,259.30 (−25.75 / −0.28%) (QNA), giving back part of Monday’s jump. Value traded fell to about QR284.6 million from QR432.9 million on Monday, across 129.5 million shares and 16,571 trades; 23 companies rose and 25 fell. QNB fell 0.9% (Reuters). Market capitalisation was about QR561.2 billion.
  • Kuwait All Share 8,654.04 (+15.52 / +0.18%) (QNA); 263.8 million shares worth about KWD74 million via 19,334 deals. Premier Market 9,050.66 (+0.18%); Main Market 8,900.83 (+0.15%); Main 50 10,078.49 (+1.10%). According to Al-Jarida, the gain followed five straight losing sessions, and the indices gave back part of larger midday gains; real estate led the sectors (+1.10%).
  • Elsewhere (Reuters): Dubai flat at 5,907; Abu Dhabi edged lower to 9,993.

Why it matters for Gulf + US-focused Arab traders

  • Bonds set the tone for stocks: a 4 bp pullback in the 10-year was enough for a record S&P 500. That link runs both ways, so this week’s 10-year and 30-year auctions matter for equities as much as for bonds.
  • The rally is uneven: large caps and utilities led while the Russell 2000 fell and the Nasdaq’s advancers and decliners were almost level. A record in a cap-weighted index does not mean most stocks are rising.
  • The Fed minutes are a check on rate expectations: October hike odds have dropped to about 19%, but Reuters notes CME pricing still shows about an 87% chance of a hike in December. Gulf markets tend to follow these shifts because most regional currencies are pegged to the dollar.
  • The Gulf rotated: TASI’s rebound was broad and came on higher value traded, while Qatar’s dip came on much lighter trading after Monday’s strong session. Kuwait’s gain was led by mid-sized companies in the Main 50 index (+1.10%) rather than the Premier Market (+0.18%).

Short educational angle — how to read a Treasury auction

With yields near multi-decade highs, government bond auctions have become market events. Three numbers do most of the work. First, the high yield versus the when-issued yield (where the new bond trades just before the deadline): if the auction clears above it, that is a “tail” and suggests buyers needed extra yield; if it clears below, it is a “stop-through” and suggests solid demand. Tuesday’s 3-year cleared at 4.932% against 4.934% — a very small stop-through. Second, the bid-to-cover ratio: total bids divided by the amount sold. Tuesday’s 2.62 was slightly below the recent average of 2.65. Third, who bought: indirect bidders (often foreign and institutional buyers), direct bidders, and primary dealers, who must absorb what others do not take. A low dealer share usually means end-investor demand was healthy; Tuesday’s dealer share was 10.7% versus a six-auction average of 12.6%. Reading these figures together for the 10-year and 30-year sales this week helps explain why long yields — and the stocks that react to them — move the way they do.
